Herbs that aid digestion and detoxification





Ginger

Ginger acts as a cleansing agent for the bowels, kidneys and skin, adding ginger to your diet is very soothing for the stomach and is effective for fighting off colds. It also improves circulation throughout the tissues and is excellent for the respiratory system. This great-tasting herb is famous for its amazing digestive benefits.

Basil

Basil is key for detoxifying and toning the kidneys, and its strong taste promotes the production of saliva, letting the body digest food properly. Basil the herb has been used traditionally as a powerful antioxidant, digestive tonic and detoxifier

Hemp

We've been hearing more and more about the health benefits of hemp in recent  years – with good reason. The nutty-tasting seeds are high in the natural antioxidants vitamin E, vitamin C and chlorophyll for cleansing the body. Hemp also contains both soluble and insoluble fibre for deep-cleansing with immediate benefits. Top cereal and salads with hemp seeds, mix into yogurt.

Lemon peel

Many people drink lemon water to cleanse, the peel is an excellent detoxifier. It strengthens the liver and encourages the release of gastric juices to digest food. It’s also packed with vitamins and nutrients.Add lemon zest to pasta, salad dressing scones and cookies to get the added benefits of this much-loved citrus fruit.

Turmeric

Turmeric, an Ayurveda spice, has a whole host of health benefits only now making their way into the nutrition spotlight. The bright yellow spice is a whole body cleanser, making it particularly beneficial. It can reduce fats, purify the blood and promote digestion. Typically used in curries, you can also put turmeric in just about anything – sauces, stews marinades and curries.

Triphala

Triphala translates as ("three fruits"), the fruits, Harada, Amla, and Bihara, relate to the three sections or 'humours' of Indian medicine. Harada, which is bitter tasting, is best known for its laxative qualities as well as being an astringent and antispasmodic. Amla, which is high in Vitamin C (20 times more than citrus fruit) is sour tasting and is considered good for inflammation of the stomach and intestines. Triphala is another Ayurveda herb originating in India, has been found to act as a complete body cleanser. Not only does Triphala help to detoxify and cleanse the colon, it also purifies the blood and removes toxins from the liver. Other cleansing benefits of Triphala include reducing some forms of cholesterol (serum cholesterol), and reduces high blood pressure.

Peppermint

Not just a breath freshener or nice after-dinner tea, peppermint is much more useful than you might think. Peppermint cleans and strengthens the entire body.
