Q&A regarding massage appointment.

For your first visit, you will be asked questions about your health and lifestyle  and you  will fill out a consultation form to determine any contra-indications and to obtain your consent for the treatment to be carried out.

A treatment plan will also be designed at this stage, your Therapist will take time to explain the course of the treatment and also check with the details you provided and see  if your GP consent is required, depending on your medical personal history. If your health is good there should be no problem.

You will leave your personal belongings in a locked locker in the changing room and you will undress down to your underwear and put on a robe and disposable slippers. You will keep the key for the locker while you are having your treatment.

Your Therapist  will ensure your comfort by using towels to cover you at all times during your massage with only the area being massaged being uncovered.  In order to protect client modesty, you will be draped in towels during the entire session.Only the part of your body being massaged will be exposed during the
treatment.
Blankets will also be available to keep you warm at all time.

What is a treatment plan?
The treatment plan determines which part of the body will be treated and any area in need of more attention due to pain and aches but also area to avoid due to local contra-indications e.g. varicose veins – A full body massage consists of feet, back/front legs, back/neck/shoulders, abdomen, arms/hands, Scalp - But each treatment can be customised according to client needs and specifications, where your Therapist will concentrate on specific areas if you prefer, within an agreed length of time

What is a fully informed consent?
A fully informed consent is a process by which a fully informed patient can participate in the treatment being carried out and agree for the massage to take place, it is part of a holistic approach to health.
- You are told about the possible risks and benefits of the treatment.
- You have the chance to ask questions.

That is why it is important to fill in a consultation form and design a treatment plan.

When should I avoid having a massage and what is a contra-indication?

It is important that you inform us of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor's care, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage prior to the session. We require written approval from your doctor for the following conditions.
  • After recent surgery
  • Cancer
  • Severe heart or circulation conditions
  • Diabetes with complication

The following conditions contraindicate massage or reflexology

Cancer patients immediately after chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
   Infectious or contagious conditions
Fever
Under the influence of drug or alcohol
Phlebitis
Blood clots

It is important that you disclose health information and that you inform me of any changes; when unsure please talk to your Therapist.

What is a referral procedure?
Depending on your medical condition and expectation from the massage, when unsure to proceed with the treatment, your therapist may refer you to your own GP or recommend another therapist –We can only work within our own perimeters and professional boundaries.

What is a home care advice for?
Giving appropriate home care advice after a treatment is part of a holistic approach to massage. It helps improve well-being and facilitate reviewing progress – It also allows clients to take a more pro-active responsibility in the healing process that follows each treatment.
Some recommendations include:
Water intake
Sleeping pattern
Exercise
Healthy eating
Reducing stress and improve relaxation
Breathing technique
What is a healing crisis?
Where there are waste products or toxins to be cleared from the body you may experience a healing reaction that can take the form of a runny nose, increased perspiration or increase bowel movements.

Examples of some possible things you may experience during a treatment or during first 24-48 hours:

Intensified emotional reactions
Tiredness
Aching muscles
Disturbed sleep

A healing crisis where symptoms become worse before beginning to improve
Those reactions represent a loosening of body tensions and can be evidence of improved functioning. In general, after getting massage clients feel relaxed, rejuvenated and uplifted.

Will I have to undress?

Some treatments like reflexology or Indian Head Massage can be performed fully dressed, however if you are getting a full body massage you will need to de-robe and only keep your underwear on -You will be provided with towels and your Therapist will be using appropriate draping technique to make sure that your modesty is protected at all time.

How do we ensure hygiene and cleanliness in our practice?

We take the up-most care to ensure that all therapists take care of their own personal hygiene and health at all time and ensure that correct hygiene procedures for a massage treatment are respected. Treatment rooms, public areas and equipment are kept clean to a very high standard.
