Anti-ageing juice.

Juicing is good for you – your body & skin reflects what is going on in the inside.
Try a daily vegetable juice high in Vitamin C, iron, fibre and antioxidants. I recommend this juice to encourage a natural healthy glow and helps with anti- ageing of the skin as well;
Ingredients;
1 carrot,
½ a beetroot (including stems and leaves),
2 sticks of celery,
1 green apple,
2 kale leaves,
1 small piece ginger,
To taste you can add a few strawberries.

**It is well worth investing in a good juicer that can juice leaf vegetables.  Try to have a juice daily.

Natural ways to delay the ageing process

1: Cut down on sugar
It’s pretty much impossible to eliminate sugar but we should reduce our intake considerably for the sake of our skin. Sugar accelerates the ageing process by causing damage to collagen and elastin in the skin, so cutting down on your consumption of the sweet stuff can reinvigorate your looks. If there is too much sugar in the body, protein molecules can cross-link with sugar molecules. Once this cross-linking process has occurred, the new sugar proteins are called advanced glycation end products (AGEs). The human body does not recognize AGEs as normal, and will produce antibodies that cause inflammation in the skin. Once formed, AGEs tend to gravitate toward dermal collagen and elastin.
2: Exercise
Staying within a healthy weight range will keep you looking younger: being too thin can have an ageing effect on the face, and being overweight can make you appear older. Exercise is immensely helpful when trying to maintain a healthy weight and has countless benefits to health, including better sleep and increased energy levels. It also improves circulation and blood flow to the skin and giving it a healthy, youthful glow. Strength training will help tighten and firm the muscles – building lean, toned muscles is one of the most effective ways to look younger than your years.
3: Get enough sleep
Our bodies restore themselves during sleep, it’s the time our cells repair the DNA damage from the day before. The concept of beauty sleep is not a myth – being sleep deprived can definitely be detrimental to our looks. Everyone’s sleep requirements are different, but aiming for at least 7 hours is a good target.
4: Get enough vitamin D
Some studies found that people with higher levels of Vitamin D age more slowly than those with lower levels, but it’s not clear why. Make sure you get enough of the ‘sunshine’ vitamin, but be careful not to overdo sun-exposure, which will not only have an ageing effect on the skin but will also increase your risk of skin cancer.
5. Drink plenty of water -drinking plenty of water keeps you hydrated which keeps your skin moisturised, helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Fish oils help dehydrated skin also.
6: Yoga & Meditation
Yoga and Meditation - soothes and de-stresses, and improves your posture and muscle tone and help you sleep. All of these help keep the ravages of age at bay.
7: Be happy-Smiling uses fewer muscles than frowning, be happyand you will feel better and when you feel good you look good.

Let food be your medicine

1. Eliminate Processed Food
Processed food is, broadly, anything in a package. More specifically, it is anything with a long, unpronounceable ingredient list, and even more rigidly, it contains processed/hydrogenated vegetable oils, preservatives, dyes, sugars. Processed food is processed so that it has a long shelf-life.
  • Refined carbs/flour-Flour, the way most people eat it, is bad for health for (at least) these reasons: it promotes unstable blood sugar, it contains genetically modified (and thus pesticide treated) grains, and/or it contains allergenic grains. When some people eat high glycaemic index foods like bread, their pancreas is stimulated to release insulin at levels that end up plummeting blood sugar. The experience of transient hypoglycaemia is one of discomfort and anxiety – jitteriness, nausea, irritability, brain-cloudiness, and fatigue – and the short-term antidote is often more of the causative agent.
  • Allergens-Gluten, soy, and corn have been identified as allergenic foods, and a leading speculation as to how these foods became and are becoming more allergenic is the nature of their processing and genetic modification rendering them unrecognisable to our immune systems and vehicles of not so healthy information. Gluten (and processed dairy), when incompletely digested, result in peptides that, once through the gut barrier can stimulate the brain and immune system in inflammatory ways.
  • Sugar-It’s in almost every packaged food. Get in to the habit of reading labels. It may come with different labels – cane sugar, crystalline fructose, high fructose corn syrup – but its all sugar. The way the body handles fructose and glucose is different; however, which may account for why fructose is 7 times more likely to result in glycation end products or sticky protein clumps that cause inflammation. This also causes skin wrinkling and is one of the major causes of skin ageing.

Mung Beans

Mung beans or what are known in India as Dahl, were first domesticated in India in 1500 BC, and are the main ingredient in kitchari – the primary Ayurvedic super-food used to cleanse the body. It is no wonder that it became a staple in the Indian diet, being well acquainted with this crop for all these years. And according to some modern research, this ancient bean is loaded with health benefits. Wash the mung bean and soak to get the most benefit.

Mung Bean Benefits

  • Packed with minerals - including magnesium - and phenols.
  • Powerful antioxidant properties support heart health.
  • Support healthy blood sugar levels.
  • Produce the fatty acid butyrate in the gut, thus supporting the health of the intestinal wall.
  • Support healthy weight loss and cravings by increasing the “I am full” hormone, cholecystokinin (CCK).

Three Main Factors Play a Role in what Makes Food High or Low in Energy Density

Three main factors play a role in what makes food high or low in energy density:

  • Water. Many fruits and vegetables are high in water content, which provides volume and weight but not calories. That's why they're low-energy-dense foods. Grapefruit, for example, is about 90 % water. Half a grapefruit has just 39 calories. Raw, fresh carrots are about 88 %water. Half a cup has only about 25 calories.
  • Fibre. High-fibre foods not only provide volume, but also take longer to digest, making you feel full longer on fewer calories. Classic examples are vegetables, fruits and whole grains.
  • Fat. Fat is high in energy density. One teaspoon of butter, for example, contains almost the same number of calories as 2 cups of low-energy-dense raw broccoli. Most fruits and vegetables don't contain a lot of fat. Foods that contain fat naturally, such as dairy products and various meats, or foods with added fats are higher in calories than their leaner or lower fat counterparts.

Serves 4

Ingredients
For the marinade

  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon green (spring) onion, including tender green top, minced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3/4 teaspoon five-spice powder

The Best Way to Eat

I believe the best way to eat, to avoid premature ageing and promote good overall health – is an Anti-Inflammatory diet, rich in Antioxidants and Low Glycaemic Load (GL). First of all let’s explain Inflammation – this is a process that robs the skin of its youth, although inflammation is a natural healing reaction, it easily gets out of control and many researchers believe it is proving to be the basis of virtually every disease process from heart disease, cancer and dementia to skin problems including skin ageing. UV, pollution, ozone, smoking, all cause Free Radicals to be produced in the body – this triggers inflammation.

The GL Way of Eating
The GL diet has received a lot of media attention and lots of books have been written on the subject – fortunately it’s not hype, and here to stay. It has many positive medical benefits such as reducing adult-onset diabetes and heart disease. The benefit of eating low GL is weight loss and a slim body and loads of energy – it is above all Anti-inflammatory. GL is a ranking system for Carbohydrate content in food portions based on their Glycaemic Index (GI) and portion size.

Onions Are Really One of Our Super Foods!

Onions are a true Super food and we should try to include some in our everyday diet. Onions, Shallots, Chives, Leeks and Garlic belong to the “Alium” family and contain some potent properties reputed to cleanse your system and have unique anti-bacterial properties. Onions also contain naturally occurring antiseptic oils “Allyl Disulphate” and “Cycloallin”, research has found that Cycloallin helps the walls of blood vessels dissolve clots that can form inside of them – this chemical is still found even after high temperatures, like frying.

Antioxidant Rich Onions
Onions contain Antioxidant Flavonoids, such as Anthocyanin’s, which impart a red/purple colour to some varieties, and the flavanols… such as Quercetin which reduces inflammation and can provide protection against cancer.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes contain Lycopene which is a powerful antioxidant, which research suggests is potentially an anti-cancer agent. It is related to vitamin A, and falls into the carotenoid group. It also gives tomatoes, watermelon and red grapefruit their red colour.

There is lycopene in raw tomatoes but not nearly as much as cooked tomatoes like tomato sauces and tomato puree/paste, even ketchup!, organic varieties have proved to contain more than the quickly grown varieties. In a small controlled study carried out by Newcastle and Manchester universities, women were given 55g of tomato paste to eat each day for 12 weeks. The skin protection against sunburn increased by 30% in the women. So combined with topical UVA and UVB protection it could offer greater benefits for your skin while in the sun. So when you’re on holiday boost your skin’s protection by indulging in lots of tomato based dishes and sauces!

Quinoa Tempeh Stir Fry

This dish is gluten free and dairy free!

Ingredients;

  • 1/2 cup quinoa, rinsed. While not technically a grain quinoa acts like one. With twice the protein content of rice, it weighs in with considerably higher protein than its grain siblings.
  • 1 small – medium yam, chopped into cubes, leave the skin on. Yams are a type of root that has a scaly brown skin and flesh that can be off white, brown or purplish.

  • 2 cups broccoli, chopped
  • 1 block tempeh, chopped into 1 inch cubes. Fermented soy is great for a healthy gut. Although it may be new to the west, tempeh is a soy food that has been eaten in Asia for hundreds of years.

Glycaemic Index (GI)

Definition
Glycaemic index diets rank carbohydrates based on their ability to affect blood glucose (sugar) levels. These diets generally consider foods high in carbohydrates, such as bread, sugar, and pasta, as bad and low carbohydrate foods, such as meat, fish, and dairy products, as good.

Origins
Low-glycaemic diets concepts were first developed in the 1960s and were originally designed for individuals with diabetes. At that time, the prevailing medical attitude was that a diet emphasizing well-balanced foods while paying special attention to carbohydrates (carbs) and avoiding carbohydrate-rich foods, helped to control blood sugar and insulin levels. This came after a number of medical studies linked eating foods high in carbohydrates with elevated blood glucose levels in diabetics. In the 1980s, researchers developed the glycaemic index (GI).

Water is so Important to your Health

Water is the basis of all life and that includes your body. Your muscles that move your body are 75% water; your bloods that transport nutrients is 82% water; your lungs that provide your oxygen are 90% water; your brain that is the control centre of your body is 76% water; even your bones are 25% water.

Every day you lose water through your breath, perspiration, urine and bowel movements. For your body to function properly, you must replenish its water supply by consuming beverages and foods that contain water.

So how much fluid does the average, healthy adult living in a temperate climate need? The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake (AI) for men is roughly 3 litres (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day. The AI for women is 2.2 litres (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.

Healthy Herbs

Herbs help us to digest foods – over the weekend we hear that turmeric may actually help cure Bowel cancer – Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has been used for 4,000 years to treat a variety of conditions. Studies show that turmeric may help fight infections and some cancers, reduce inflammation, and treat digestive problems; - further research is required to confirm if this is true.

According to Raju our resident Dr of Naturopathic medicine” In his native India where spices tend to be used by the handful, incidence of diet-related diseases like heart disease and cancer have long been low. But when Indians move away and adopt more Westernised eating patterns, their rates of those diseases rise. While researchers usually blame the meatier, fattier nature of Western diets, Raju and other experts believe that herbs and spices—or more precisely, the lack of them- are also an important piece of the dietary puzzle. “When Indians eat more Westernised foods, they’re getting much fewer spices than their traditional diet contains,” he explains. “They lose the protection those spices are offering.”
